Although similar to the commonly-seen Kimono, the far more elaborate, the Jyuunihitoe is a formal robe made of various silk layers, first worn by court ladies in the Heian era. Though rarely seen today, the Empress of Japan recently appeared in a Jyuunihitoe during the Enthronement Ceremony.
